BIO 

S E A N  M I T C H E L L was born in Bethlehem, Pa., grew up in Dallas and was educated at St. Mark’s School of Texas and Brown University, where he earned a degree in English & American Literature in 1970. He taught English and coached soccer at Cincinnati Country Day School before landing an internship at the Washington Star-News in the nation’s capital and becoming a journalist. He returned to Dallas to edit an alternative weekly, then joined the staff of the Dallas Times Herald as a feature writer, music and theatre critic and eventually moved to Los Angeles to cover Hollywood for the Herald Examiner and Los Angeles Times. His articles about film, theatre, radio and popular music, have also appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Magazine, New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, USA Today, and many other publications. He has been a critic fellow at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and served on the jury for the Pulitzer Prize in drama. Awards include the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for excellence in writing about music and the George Jean Nathan Award for distinguished drama criticism. A collection of his profiles and essays, Why the News from Hollywood Always Wears a Tan, was published in 2012. His memoir Irresistible Calling: A Memoir of Journalism and the Arts will be published in fall 2025 by TCU Press. He lives in Dallas.
