The LA Times has a story today about the continued rise of the Super Bowl as a boffo TV event, with ratings off the charts, including a 20 percent bump in female viewers. Lots of self-congratulatory comments by NFL and network folk about it being a great unifying and flag-waving event for America, without mentioning that all the people living in their cars will have to watch at a sports bar or suitably equipped shelter. My favorite Super Bowl quote still belongs to the former Dallas Cowboy Duane Thomas (he of the different drummer branch of the NFL) who once said, “If it’s the ultimate game, how come they’re playing it again next year?”
